The Romans were instrumental in spreading and developing vine cultivation in Portugal, beginning in the Sado Valley over 2,000 years ago. They may have even introduced their cherished grape variety, Sangiovese—Sang di Jove, meaning "blood of Jupiter." Anima, Latin for breath, breeze, or soul, embodies the essence of Herdade do Portocarro’s winemaking. Winemaker José da Mota Capitão infuses each bottle with an element of mystery.
